Students in Huron Valley Recreation and Community Education’s fencing program are stepping into the exciting world of modern Olympic fencing while building confidence, teamwork and new athletic skills.

The program, open to students in grades 2-5 and grades 6-12, welcomes both new and returning participants in a fun, fast-paced and inclusive environment. Most students enter the class with little or no fencing experience, but instructors say the program is designed to help every child learn and grow at their own pace.

“What we are doing is referred to as modern Olympic fencing,” said the instructor. “I don’t think there is a child who has not at some point dreamed about playing with swords, and this is that dream.”

Classes begin with a full-body warm-up before students learn the fundamentals of fencing, including balance, movement and footwork. Once suited up in protective gear, students participate in drills, activities and fencing games that reinforce the skills learned during each lesson. The class often ends with open sparring sessions, allowing students to put their new techniques into practice in friendly fencing bouts.

“It’s fun because you get to poke people,” one student said with a laugh.

The program follows the Teach It, Practice It, Play It® approach from the Youth Enrichment League, which focuses on teaching students new skills each class, practicing those skills through games and encouraging students to apply them during matches.

Safety remains the top priority throughout the program. All equipment is provided, including safety swords, protective masks, chest plates and jackets, giving students the opportunity to safely experience the sport in a high-energy setting.

Organizers say fencing continues to grow in popularity because it appeals to a wide variety of students. Known as the “sport of the intellectual athlete,” fencing often attracts students who enjoy strategy, problem-solving, computers or video games, as well as athletes looking for a new and unique challenge.

Whether students are trying fencing for the first time or returning to sharpen their skills, the program offers a chance to stay active, make friends and experience a sport unlike any other.
