Lakeland Senior Kate Hanneman Caps Historic Career with Back-to-Back National Titles
While many students spent spring break on vacation, Lakeland High School senior Kate Hanneman of White Lake was making national headlines on the slopes.
Hanneman traveled to Copper Mountain, Colorado to defend her title at the National Championship Snowboard Cross event—and once again delivered a dominant performance, cementing her status as one of the top high school snowboard athletes in the country.
“We got there about a week before the race so I could practice on the course and get comfortable,” Hanneman said. “Race day is extremely nerve-wracking. You wake up early and try to stay relaxed.”
Her path to victory wasn’t without challenges. During the time trials, Hanneman suffered a fall, placing her third heading into the elimination rounds. Despite the setback, she remained composed and focused.
“I just tried to stay calm and do my thing,” she said. “When I crossed the finish line and turned around, I realized I had come out first.”
That resilience has defined Hanneman’s career. According to Lakeland Coach Aubrey Abbott, her growth over the past four years has been remarkable.
“Watching Kate grow as both an athlete and a person has been very rewarding,” Abbott said. “Her dedication, discipline, and heart inspire her entire team. She has been a top SBX racer all four years of her high school career.”
Hanneman’s success extends beyond the national stage. This season, she captured the overall individual title in Michigan, earning state champion honors while helping lead Lakeland’s boardercross team to an undefeated season and a state championship appearance.
Her impact has also been felt across the district. Paul Salah, superintendent of Huron Valley Schools, praised Hanneman’s achievements and representation of the community.
“Kate’s continued success on the national stage is a tremendous point of pride for our entire Huron Valley Schools community,” Salah said. “To defend her national title and everything she accomplished during her four years is an extraordinary achievement.”
Hanneman credits much of her success to the support she’s received along the way.
“The support of the community has been great,” she said. “Being recognized by my school, the administration, and my family has really helped push me to my limits.”
With back-to-back national titles, a state championship, and a leadership role on one of Lakeland’s most successful teams, Hanneman’s high school career stands as one of the most accomplished in program history—an achievement that will inspire future student-athletes for years to come.
