This is our first official Student Athlete of the Week! Gavin Johns is the Student Athlete of the Week for the week of 4/17. Gavin is well deserving of that award and was recommended by his coach because: "Gavin competed in three events (that is a lot for a distance runner) at the Novi Relays. He led the 4x1600m relay with a team best of 4:36 helping the team earn a medal for 3rd place. He ran the longest leg (800m) of the sprint medley relay and helped that team medal in 2nd place. He also anchored the 4x400 team with an impressive 52.5 second split."

Gavin stated "I'm very grateful, because Lakeland has such great athletic programs, like baseball, track, and a lot of other spring sports. I'm just happy to be a part of the great athletic program at Lakeland."

One piece of advice Gavin gives to other student athletes who want to also reach this level of achievement is that “Hard work and grit will get you wherever you desire to go in life whether it be athletics or anything you pursue. Allow urself to push past the struggles especially in athletics. Then when success such as this award comes have gratitude for the journey.”

The Emerging Leader Honor Award recognizes members who have been involved at the local, chartered association, and DECA Inc. levels. These members are graduating seniors who have maintained at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average, completed at least one course in marketing, business management and administration, entrepreneurship, finance, or hospitality and tourism and participated in a variety of activities that helped them become community-oriented, professionally responsible and experienced leaders.
