Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12 
Required Pre-Requisite: Fundamentals of Art and Design

This is an introductory studio class for students who wish to explore the art of ceramics. Student will be introduced to traditional and historical ceramic arts, as well as, functional and nonfunctional. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the metamorphosis of clay from plastic to fired, respect of tools, supplies and facilities, and the methods and techniques of glazing. Students will learn basic hand building techniques: pinch, coil and slabs through a variety of projects. Functional and sculptural applications will be explored. An introduction to wheel throwing and basic wheel forms will be achieved. Studio maintenance such as making clay, firing kilns and maintaining glazes will be explored. Students will learn how to exhibit, present, and publish quality works of art. Willingness to get involved in the creative process and higher level learning is a requirement. Students must be a dedicated art student with a genuine interest in learning about the art of ceramics. A lab fee is required.

POTTERY CURRICULUM

ADVANCED POTTERY 

Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12 
Required Pre-Requisite: Fundamentals of Art and Design & Pottery

This is studio class for students who wish to continue to explore the art of ceramics. Student will combine traditional and historical ceramic arts, as well as, functional and nonfunctional ideas in their own works. Emphasis will be placed on on problem solving and experimentation of clay and glaze techniques. As a result assignments will provide opportunity for making unlimited personal and creative artistic decisions. Functional and sculptural applications will continue to be explored and used in student work. Students will demonstrate mastery of proper wheel throwing and finishing techniques. Assignments will emphasize mastery of skills learned in level one with a new focus on craftsmanship. Studio maintenance such as making clay, firing kilns and maintaining glazes will continue with added responsibilities. Students will learn how to exhibit, present, and publish quality works of art. Students will learn how to exhibit, present, and publish quality works of art. Willingness to get involved in the creative process and higher level learning is a requirement. Students must be a dedicated art student with a genuine interest in learning about the advanced art of ceramics. A lab fee is required.
