DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

Grade Level: 11, 12 only 
Required Pre-Requisite: Fundamentals of Art and Design 
FEE: $30 

In this course we will explore digital photography in relation to fine art and focus on the basic operations and functions of digital single lens reflex camera. Students will learn about photographic elements of art and principles of design, composition, and lighting. They will explore the history of photography, learning about its scientific and technological developments, important innovators in the field, and relevance within diverse cultural contexts. Students will write and speak about aesthetic, technical and expressive qualities in a photograph, learning to critique their own and other's work. Students will be introduced to the photographic vocabulary, using tools such as framing, composition, "rule of thirds", light, texture, pattern, lines, symmetry, depth of field, distance, perspective, culture, space, balance, color and black and white photography. Students will be expected to demonstrate an ability to use the tools competently in the production of their artwork, however, the production and analysis of expressive and thoughtful artwork is the main objective of this course. Students will learn how to exhibit, present, and publish quality works of art. Willingness to get involved in the creative process and higher level learning is a requirement. Students must be a dedicated art student with a genuine interest in learning about digital photography. A lab fee is required.

Required Equipment: Digital Camera, SD card and reader.

Note: A personal laptop is helpful. A DSLR camera will be required for advanced level course.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY CURRICULUM

ADVANCED DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY 

Grade Level: 11, 12 only 
Required Pre-Requisite: Fundamentals of Art and Design & Digital Photography 
FEE: $35

Prerequisite: Digital Photography Level 1

In this course we will explore digital photography in relation to fine art and focus on advanced operations and functions of digital single lens reflex camera. Students will learn about photographic elements of art and principles of design, composition through advanced level assignments. Students will learn image techniques and digital manipulation using GIMP, or Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom, teaching them how to archive, organize and optimize their photographs for print or web purposes. Students will learn how to manage and creatively alter digital images as well as critically analyze the use of visual media as a means of communication for their art work. They will be provided a greater level of autonomy, expected to pursue their own interests and develop an individual voice. Students will explore the significance of photography within the larger context of the art word, and learn about the critical and varied application it has to the modern working world. Students will write and speak about aesthetic, technical and expressive qualities in a photograph critiquing their own and other's work. Students will further develop their skills in relationship to the photographic vocabulary, using tools such as framing, composition, "rule of thirds", light, texture, pattern, lines, symmetry, depth of field, distance, perspective, culture, space, balance, and digital imaging. Students will be expected to demonstrate an ability to use the tools competently in the production of their art work. Students will learn how to exhibit, present, and publish quality works of art. Willingness to get involved in the creative process and higher level learning is a requirement. Students must be a dedicated art student with a genuine interest in learning about digital photography. A lab fee is required.
