Students learn skills for life after high school in Mrs. Breen's class

Milford High School continues the tradition of teaching students necessary life skills in the Adult Skills for Living class. The teacher, Kelsey Breen, is excited that MHS still finds value in these types of classes, as many schools have dropped them from their curriculum.

The students current lesson is sewing. They have also learned about the family cycle, what a healthy relationship looks like, how to handle conflict and soft job skills. Breen states that she is currently adding a lot more to the curriculum, wanting to incorporate the old school economics classes. Students are learning how to do laundry, cook, and budget. “Skills I think we’ve just assumed they know, that most really don’t,” Breen explains.

A portion of Breen’s economics lesson will be shopping for a first apartment. “I've been seeing a lot on social media lately about schools not teaching these types of skills anymore.  I'm happy to say that we do.” Students are excited about Breen’s classes. One of her Early Childhood students states that “It’s fun but stressful when we get to carry the baby around. It makes us realize that being a parent is a lot of work.” It’s great to see that Breen’s teaching is working and that the students are enjoying what they learn in class.
