Huron Valley Marching Band, Jazz Band, Drumline, and Winter Guard

Jazz Band

The MHS Jazz Band is an extra-curricular band open to all MHS Students.  The group rehearses on Thursdays after school until 4:30 pm.  The Jazz Band meets starting in December and runs until the end of the school year.  Annual Performances include concerts at Milford, Jazz at the Amp (Central Park, Milford), and various opportunities around the state.

Jazz is a great place to further your skills on your primary instrument or learn a secondary instrument if you do not already play trumpet, trombone, saxophone, clarinet, bass, guitar, keyboard, or drums, which are the instruments we have in Jazz Band--Big Band format.

Huron Valley Marching Band

The Huron Valley Marching Band is an extra-curricular band that is open to all HVS students in grades 9 – 12, as well as students enrolled in 8th grade band at one of our middle schools (provided they are nominated by their middle school band director or by the winter guard instructors).

The Huron Valley Marching Band completed it’s 1st season of competition in 2021, Finishing 9th in Flight I at the Michigan Competing Band Association State Championships.  The band performs at both Lakeland and Milford football games, local parades, and competitions in Michigan and throughout the United States.  The group practices in the summer, with preseason starting in August.  Practice time is split between Milford High School and Lakeland High School. The regular season is September through November, culminating with their performance at Nationals in Indianapolis in November.

Winter Drumline - Huron Valley Percussion

The Huron Valley Percussion is an extra-curricular ensemble that utilizes percussion instruments indoors. HVP is open to all HVS students in grades 9-12, as well as students enrolled in 8th grade band at one of our middle schools (provided they are nominated by their middle school band director).

HVP also includes membership from other local area students who do not have winter percussion groups of their own but wish to participate.  The group competes in-state through the Michigan Alliance of Performing Arts, and nationally through Winter Guard International.  Practices are held at Lakeland High School, and their season is December through April, with their final event being World Championships held in Dayton, Ohio.  HVP has been a World Bronze Medalist (2007) and World Finalist the last 5 consecutive years of competition.

Winter Guard - Huron Valley Alliance and Huron Valley United

The Huron Valley Alliance and Huron Valley United are both extra-curricular ensembles that perform a choreographed routine using guard equipment, dance, and movement through indoor competition.   Both guards are open to all HVS students in grades 9-12.  HVA is our varsity-level guard, and also includes membership open to students outside HVS that do not have a winter guard program at their own schools.  HVU is our junior-varsity level guard and is open to students in 6 – 8 grade as well, as they compete in a classification that allows for middle/high school membership.  HVU is open only to HVS students.

The groups compete in-state through the Michigan Color Guard Circuit, and HVA also competes nationally through Winter Guard International.  Practices are held at Milford High School, and their season is December through April, with their final event being World Championships held in Dayton, Ohio.  HVA has been a regional finalist for WGI and will return to the World Championships in 2022.
