students wearing tigers gear in line to get food for opening day party

Fourth grade students marked Opening Day with a fun-filled, long-standing classroom tradition centered around the Detroit Tigers.

The day began with Tigers-themed coloring activities before students enjoyed a classic ballpark-style lunch complete with hot dogs and snacks. The celebration continued with a viewing of the beloved baseball film The Sandlot, adding to the festive atmosphere.

The annual event dates back more than a decade, when the teacher—an avid Tigers fan—was unable to attend Opening Day while student teaching. Encouraged by a mentor to bring the experience into the classroom, the idea of grilling hot dogs, watching baseball, and organizing themed activities was born.

Now in its 14th year, the Opening Day party has become a memorable tradition for students, blending learning with fun and giving every child—whether a baseball fan or not—a chance to be part of the excitement.
