its friday

Happy Friday, Lakewood Families!

This week was National School Safety week. All students in JK-5th grade engaged in a short presentation that focuses on how to stay safe when there is a fire, severe weather, a medical emergency, a health emergency, when there are building maintenance problems, and/or when there is a dangerous person nearby. Additionally, during National Safety week, we talked about good hygiene to prevent the spread of illness, and we also talked about internet safety. All information in each grade is directly connected with the Michigan Health Standards.

Halloween Updates:

On the early afternoon of Friday, October 30th, Lakewood Elementary will celebrate fall with a costume parade. Although it will be a half day, the morning will begin as usual, with students entering the building and heading to their classrooms. We ask that costumes are NOT worn to school. They will have time in class to put them on before the parade begins. Your student must be able to put on their own costume.

Parade Details: Weather permitting, at approximately 12:05pm students and staff will begin the parade. Parents and caregivers are invited to watch the parade by forming a line outside (MAP - click here). Please keep plenty of space for the classrooms to walk by.

IMPORTANT end of day dismissal for 10/30: When the parade is over, all students must return to the classroom with their teacher. They will need time to remove their costumes and pack up all their belongings for dismissal. 5th grade Safeties will also need time to get to the students they help. The office will not be calling students from class early so please remain outside and wait for them to exit. If you have an unavoidable circumstance we will do our best to assist you.

In the case of inclement weather, the parade will be moved indoors for staff and students only.

Classroom Celebrations: Individual classrooms may have celebrations at different times of the day. Please consult your child’s classroom teacher, newsletter, or website for those details.

Costume Information: Please note the following rules regarding Halloween costumes for students and adults during this day of fun:

  • Gory and/or scary costumes will not be allowed. Instead, children are encouraged to wear child friendly costumes such as superheroes, story book characters, movie or T.V show/cartoon characters, etc.

  • While we understand that make-up is often an integral part of the costume, we regret that it cannot be worn for the school Fall activities.

  • Absolutely no weapons or replicas of weapons are allowed in school.

  • Blow-up costumes do not work for the parade, as they restrict movement.

  • We understand and respect that not everyone feels comfortable with costumes and/or participating so feel free to choose the level of participation that meets your child’s needs.

Snacks and Allergy Alert: There are AIRBORNE allergies in the building which include: pumpkin, squash, gourds, sesame, and synthetic fragrances. These ingredients CANNOT enter the building whether it is in the form of food/drinks, lotions, sanitizers, candles, sprays, fragrances, etc. All snacks must be individually wrapped and store bought (not homemade). Your child’s teacher will communicate if snack donations are needed. Lastly, please consider this a friendly reminder to be mindful of items purchased for student consumption. We do have students with peanut/tree nut allergies. Thank you for taking this into account when purchasing snacks for our students.

We are looking forward to a fun and exciting day. If you have any questions, please contact the teacher or office. As always, thank you for all you do for the staff and students of Lakewood!

So sorry that this week’s edition is so long.

Hope you all have a great weekend!
