global school play day

Happy Monday, Lakewood Families!

Last week I had the privilege of visiting several classrooms during their daily math instruction. Mrs. Dumire’s 3rd grade class engaged in a very collaborative, real world math task card activity in which they had to come up with different ways to package 2,342 into one package by making cases of 1,000; boxes of 100; and bundles of ten. They modeled these different ways using place value blocks and place value drawings. It was awesome to see the rich discussion around various math concepts. Meanwhile, Mrs. Frazier’s kindergarten class also engaged in a rich collaborative math task in which students had to subitize visual representations of numbers in the teens and then place that visual representation cards on the class clothesline number line. Mrs. Dolkowski’s junior kindergarten class also engaged in a collaborative subitizing activity in which they had to identify visual representations of the number 9. Our teachers are doing a great job of building a strong foundation for our students so that they can be prepared for math courses at the secondary level.

Additionally, last week we recognized Global Play Day. Our 4th grade students had a great time playing various games like Twister, Checkers, Don’t Break the Ice and Yahtzee. While our kindergarten students played Candy Lane and Trouble, played bakery, and built with Legos and blocks. What a fun day!

I hope you had the opportunity to review your child’s term 2 report card. If you would like to schedule an in person, virtual, or phone conference; please reach out to your child’s teacher anytime in the spring semester.

Also, please remember that we will go outside for recess anytime the temps are above 15 degrees and the windchill (feels like temperature) is above 0 degrees. Please make sure your child has the appropriate winter gear (hats, gloves, boots, snow pants, and coats). If your child is missing something, please encourage them to check the lost and found in the cafeteria.

Have a great week, and stay warm!
