Thanksgiving break

Happy Monday, Lakewood Families!

First I wanted to congratulate our Girls on the Run team for completing their end of season 5K on Sunday 11/16 at Belle Isle. I also ran with them, and we made a deal that I would buy them pizza at their end of year party, if at least one of them beat me across the finish line, and a special congrats to Harlow Duffield that did just that. The team enjoyed pizza and awards on Wednesday for their last official session. Thank you to Ms. Kallis and Mrs. Kormos for coaching this team!

Mr. Walker and I had the pleasure of visiting several classrooms on Wednesday and today during math to watch students engage in number sense routines. These routines are 5-8 minute whole class discussions about numbers involving mental math and spiral review of concepts, meaning teachers are not teaching new content during these. These help students use numbers flexibly, promote problem solving skills, help students better understand number properties and operations, and build number sense.

Our school is trying to raise money to bring the Blessings in a Backpack program back to Lakewood, which allows our school to send home bags of food for the weekend with our students that face food insecurity. I have included a flyer below with the QR code to donate, but here are the steps.

How to designate your monthly Blessings in a Backpack subscription for Huron Valley:

  1. Go to blessingsinabackpack.org

  2. Click “Donate today”

  3. Select “Be a monthly donor”

  4. Choose your gift amount ($15/month feeds one child) and fill in your information.

  5. Locate the text box and type that you designate your donation to Huron Valley

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday with your families! Just a reminder that we will be out of school Wednesday, November 26th thru Friday, November 28th.
