The Huron Valley community is coming together this month to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through a series of free, family-friendly events centered on the theme, “The Great Force of Non-violence.” Organized by the Huron Valley Martin Luther King Jr. Day Committee, the celebration highlights service, education, artistic expression and reflection on the ongoing impact of the Civil Rights Movement.

A cornerstone of this year’s observance is the MLK Day National Day of Service Meal Drive, running January 1–19. Community members are encouraged to donate ingredients for a “Chili for 4” meal or make a monetary contribution to support local families experiencing financial need through Community Sharing Outreach Center. Volunteers will assemble meals on MLK Day, January 19, from 5–8 p.m. at The Warehouse at River's Edge.

The celebration also showcases student and community creativity through an Art, Writing and Multimedia Contest, open to participants of all ages. Submissions inspired by the theme of nonviolence are due Friday, January 9, with winning entries displayed at Suzanne Haskew Arts Center and recognized following the annual march.

Throughout January, people can visit the Smithsonian Commemorative Poster Exhibit: City of Hope, on display January 4–24 at the Suzanne Haskew Arts Center. The exhibit explores Resurrection City, the 1968 Poor People’s Campaign, and Dr. King’s vision for economic justice.

Additional events include a Film Appreciation Night on Monday, January 12, at Milford Independent Cinema, featuring a free screening of The Third Harmony, followed by a discussion on nonviolence. On Saturday, January 17, the Milford Public Library will host Envisioning a Just Future, a conversation on racial and social justice led by Professor Emerita and author June Manning Thomas.

The week culminates with the 21st Annual March on Main Street on Sunday, January 18, beginning at 1 p.m. (line-up at 12:30 p.m.). The march will start at Prospect Hill Shopping Center and conclude at The Warehouse, featuring music, refreshments and recognition of contest winners.

Organizers encourage residents, families, and students to attend events, participate in the meal drive, and reflect on Dr. King’s enduring message of nonviolence and service.
