What is School Age Care?

School Age Care is an extended day program located in each elementary building for school-aged students in junior kindergarten through 5th grade, before and/or after the regular school day.

HOURS & RATES:

  • Hours: 6:45am until start of school & after school until 6pm at each elementary school if the program meets the minimum requirement of 26 students per session and if enough caregivers can be recruited.

RATES: 2026-2027

  • Morning $15 per session per child

  • Afternoon: $15 per session per child

  • Registration: $100 per child

  • Fees are non-refundable

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why hasn’t my registration fee been charged yet?
 Registration fees are charged once we can confirm that a program will run.

Why is a set schedule required?
 Set schedules allow us to properly staff our programs and determine whether there is enough interest to operate.

I’m unable to provide a set schedule. Can I still use School Age Care as needed?
 You may request care by emailing schoolagecare@hvs.org. Please note that space is not guaranteed and depends on program availability.  The per-session fee for students without a set schedule is $25.

I have a set schedule. Can I add additional days if needed?
 You may request additional days by emailing schoolagecare@hvs.org. Availability is not guaranteed and depends on program capacity.  The per-session fee for additional days is $15.

I need to change my child’s schedule. How do I do that?
 Please email schoolagecare@hvs.org with at least two weeks’ notice. A $25 schedule change fee will be applied to your account.

If my child is ill or is not going to school that day, do I need to let school age care know?
 Yes, please let school age care know if your child will not be attending a scheduled day. A $25 no call/no show fee will be charged for afternoon sessions. 

What if I don’t make it by 6pm for pickup?
There is a $1.00 a minute late charge forever minute after 6pm.

Why are there so many fees?
 School Age Care programs are self-supporting and rely entirely on child care fees to operate.

  • Consistent schedules help us recruit and retain caregivers.

  • Reliable attendance ensures programs can open and remain open.

  • We are licensed by the State of Michigan and must meet strict requirements, which result in operational costs that are passed along to families.

How can I help support the opening of programs?

  • Help spread the word that we are hiring caregivers at each school.

    • Hours: 6:40 a.m.–9:10 a.m. and 3:45 p.m.–6:00 p.m. on school days

    • Site Supervisors start at $21/hour (must meet State of Michigan LARA requirements)

    • Assistants start at $18/hour

  • Encourage friends and neighbors who need before- or after-school care to register.
