Huron Valley Schools has launched its first-ever English Learners (EL) Science Summer Extension Program for students in Junior Kindergarten through 5th grade, offering a unique blend of science exploration and language development.

The four-week program kicked off last week with a deep dive into life sciences, as students explored the life cycles of animals, plants and butterflies. Through hands-on activities such as seed planting and caterpillar observation, students are learning what living things need to grow and survive—while simultaneously building their academic vocabulary and English language skills.

“This program gives students the opportunity to use English in real time, in real ways, in the real world,” said program staff. “Whether they’re asking questions, making observations, or working with classmates, they’re practicing language through meaningful experiences.”

One of the early highlights was a field trip to Potter Park Zoo in Lansing, where students enjoyed a guided tour focused on animal habitats and survival adaptations. The outing brought science lessons to life and gave students a chance to connect their classroom learning with the world around them.

The program is designed to boost both science understanding and language confidence through inquiry-based learning, collaborative projects, and community connections. Teachers and staff have been inspired by the enthusiasm and growth they’re seeing so far.

There are three more weeks of engaging science themes and field trips ahead. The district invites families and the broader community to follow the students’ journey as they explore the wonders of science and unlock the power of language.
