Garden Club Vision
The vision of the Garden & Grounds Committee is to engage the students, the students’ families, and our faculty in the planning and maintenance of the gardens and grounds at Kurtz Elementary School. The underlying premise is NOT to focus ALL of our efforts on three clean up days, but to establish a spirit of community and year-round engagement so that when the three maintenance days come, that most work is done already. That way, these outreach days are more for recognition of volunteers. Any more substantial work that requires more hands to do the heavy lifting will be scheduled for these larger clean up days. What we hope will happen is that individuals and families will come to work at Kurtz whenever they are available.
How to Communicate Work To-Be-Done
- The list of chores will be kept updated at a central location in a protected enclosure;
- The list of chores will be kept updated on a Kurtz Grounds & Garden Committee area of the Kurtz Website;
- The list of chores will be kept updated on a Kurtz Grounds & Garden Committee Facebook announcements. An additional strategy to engage families outside of the committee is to engage different classrooms each month to do what tasks have been assigned. Outreach could be accomplished through the Room Mom structure.
Leader in Me:
A primary goal is to encourage the full participation and spirit of our Kurtz kids in the Garden & Grounds initiative through a “KURTZ GROWS” campaign. Students could be engaged in a gardening club to be hosted by a Master Gardener (to be recruited through the MSU Extension—Oakland County) to teach water conservation, soil education, proper siting of plants, etc.) These meetings could be held through the winter months during recess so that Kurtz kids could be utilizing the scientific method when spring breaks and they are able to engage in work in the spring gardens. It also is our goal to have the students engaged in planning for the front flower bed at the main entrance through a classroom competition.
