Welcome to Johnson Elementary!

Huron Valley Schools Mission:

Huron Valley Schools , Inspiring and building futures...One student at a time.

Johnson Elementary Mission:

Johnson Elementary...inspiring, empowering, and growing leaders.

JOHNSON ELEMENTARY VISION:

To create and provide a happy, caring, and safe environment for all students.  Our young leaders will be empowered to become interdependent, passionate thinkers and achieve their full potential to be successful now and in the future.

CELEBRATING GROWTH AT JOHNSON!
In analyzing growth, two types of data are often looked at – qualitative data (observable and anecdotal, but difficult to measure) and quantitative (deals with numbers; measurable). Beginning with observable, qualitative data, we have much to celebrate. Johnson is a “Leader in Me” school and we have continued to make strides towards inspiring, empowering and growing leaders. Environmentally, we continue to add to our walls leadership quotes, color, pictures, and other celebratory symbols of leadership. Many of our classrooms developed and displayed their own mission statements. Data walls are being implemented allowing for students to make their own academic and behavioral growth visible. Leadership Notebooks were implemented building wide providing a place for students to be proactive in tracking their personal growth. Students continue to become more fluent in speaking and living the 7 habits and we continue to find ways to recognize and celebrate our leaders as illustrated by our “Play like a Leader” initiative. Leadership roles are plenty, providing numerous opportunities for our Jaguars to recognize and hone their "inner-leader."  To make the picture even clearer, I encourage you to take a walk through our building next year so you can see and feel our growth for yourself. I know you will be impressed!

Quantitatively, we have much to celebrate as well. Each year all students take the NWEA MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) test. This is an online, computer adaptive test aimed at measuring academic growth throughout the year. We are proud and excited to share how our Jaguars grew this year:

2014-2015 POINTS OF PRIDE:

  •  In reading, our building went from 56% proficiency in 2013-2014 to 63.8% in 2014-2015. The district goal was for 60% of all students to be proficient. We exceeded that goal!
  • In Math, our building went from 61% in 2013-2014 to 71.3% in 2014-2015. Again, the district goal was for 60% of all students to be proficient. We far exceeded that goal!
  • Through our Tier 2 W.I.N intervention, we began the school year servicing 101 students in grades 1-5, mostly for reading, and some for math. We do service kindergarten as well but those numbers tend to grow as the year goes on and we learn more about our youngest Jaguars. We ended the year with only 66 students requiring Tier 2 W.I.N support. This means that we moved 35 students from not proficient to proficient, mainly in reading and some math. This is larger than an entire class size!

With SY 2015-2016 being year one of a brand new math program, year three of Leader in Me, and continued professional learning in areas such as reading workshop, writing workshop and Cultures of Thinking, we expect continued growth at Johnson. In the meantime, it’s important to celebrate our current successes and we truly have many to celebrate! Hats off to our staff, parents, and most of all the students of Johnson for working hard and truly being leaders of their learning!
